Google Ads: Constantly Evolving
If there’s one thing we can count on in digital marketing, it’s change. Over the last few years, the rise of AI has accelerated that pace more than ever before. Google Ads, which launched back in 2000, has long been the leader in paid search. Nearly twenty-five years later, it continues to reinvent itself, and its newest updates mark a turning point toward an AI-driven future.
What's New
Google recently rolled out two campaign types that give us a glimpse of where paid search is headed: Performance Max and AI Max. Both are powered by AI, but they serve different purposes.
Performance Max, often called PMax, lets advertisers run search, display, and YouTube ads under one campaign umbrella instead of managing them separately. Google’s AI then decides where to place ads based on where a customer might be in their buying journey and which channel is most likely to drive action.
The real shift is in how campaigns are built. Instead of relying solely on keywords, Performance Max uses signals to guide targeting. These can include:
- Predefined audiences built from Google’s in-market data (for example, “Heating Systems,” “Furnace and Heating Services,” or “HVAC Service”)
- Search themes that give Google a clearer picture of what your customers are searching for and which topics drive conversions
- Customer data, like email lists, that help the system find people similar to your best customers
When combined, these signals create a richer profile of your target audience and allow you to reach potential customers you may not have found through keywords alone.
AI Max is the newest campaign type, and it focuses on enhancing paid search directly. Think of it as an upgrade to your existing search campaigns. It uses AI to improve search term matching, refine ad copy, and even choose the landing page most likely to answer a user’s query.
Just like Performance Max, the goal is to help advertisers capture traffic that traditional keyword targeting may leave behind. Early adopters like MPW are seeing improved reach, relevance and conversion rates, but we’re fully cognizant of the fact it needs human expertise and management to run efficiently.
Balancing AI With Human Touch
AI is powerful, but it’s far from a set-and-forget solution. Data can expand reach, but it takes human oversight to make sure campaigns stay relevant and effective. That means reviewing queries to confirm ads are appearing for the right searches, setting clear audience signals, testing AI campaigns against manual ones, and making adjustments along the way. Used thoughtfully, this balance ensures campaigns not only perform well but also align with business goals and brand values.
